New Wine Festival Benefits Alzheimer's Disease

Wine Festival

Wine glasses sparkle in the afternoon sun as a local band plays a familiar tune from the nearby wooden pavilion. Natural trees form a majestic canopy over the landscaped area below. Food trucks delight hungry attendees with street food and cold drinks while several hundred people mix and mingle among the art and merchandise vendors.

The Longview Wine Festival will be the first of its kind for Longview. Modeled after a Texarkana fundraiser that began in 2015, the Longview event benefits the East Texas Alzheimer’s Alliance.

Kristen Ishihara, co-chair of the Longview Wine Festival and board member of the East Texas Alzheimer’s Alliance, attended the Texarkana event and thought it would be a great way to raise money and support for those suffering with the disease and their families and caregivers.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, there is an estimated 5.5 million Americans living with Alzheimer's Dementia in 2017. 360,000 of those individuals are Texans. Texas ranks fourth in the number of AD cases and second in the number of AD deaths. Perhaps most striking of all, every 66 seconds someone develops AD.

“Since my retirement from active medical practice, I have been on the board of the newly formed East Texas Alzheimer’s Alliance. Our goal is to fund respite care for families in East Texas caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease,” said Dr. James Sawyer.

“I realized in my last years of practice that this service is much needed in our part of Texas. My mother had Alzheimer's type dementia the last nine years of her life and I know from personal experience the great difficulties families experience.”

The Longview Wine Festival will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2018 from noon to 7 pm, at The Green, a new environmentally-friendly outdoor venue located at the northwest corner of Spur 63 and Highway 31. Wines by Los Pinos Ranch Vineyards, Enoch Stomp Winery, Kiepersol and many others will be available. Country Music legend, Neal McCoy, will be selling his private label wine called “Billy” and beer lovers won’t be disappointed as several types of beer will be sold.
